mount rushmore

we visited

mt. rushmore for the weekend,

up north in southwest south dakota.

this is what we found about 5 1/2 hours' drive north......

a breathtaking spectacle!

what a wonderful time we had!

such a beautiful memorial to this american icon.

and what a perfect time of year to visit. 

of the 3 million visitors a year, i'd say there were about 30 here today!

i remember coming here with my family when i was a little girl.

it is fun to share it now with my little girl - and big boys.

washington, jefferson, roosevelt and lincoln carved in granite.

95% of the sculpting was done with dynamite.  fascinating history.

we also saw some amazing wildlife on the great plains....

gorgeous buffalo....

wild turkeys and white tailed dear....

and mountain sheep.
