white frost

i was all set to post photos of a quick trip our family took together over Christmas break
but a most fantastical happening has occurred in the valley over the last couple
of hours and i must share it with you.
it's called white frost or hoar frost:  a deposit of needle-like ice crystals formed by direct condensation at temperatures below freezingpoint.
mother nature has touched her magical wand upon every living thing.

an icicle tree, truly a winter fairyland.

  2. wow how beautiful! I've never heard of this before. Were the needles very fragile?

    1. It is delicate. When Roxy walks through the long grass, it falls to the ground making the sound of glass shards. This morning we woke to an even heavier cover and more vibrant white. It is quite spectacular!

  3. I grew up in Saskatchewan where hoar frost was a frequent occurrence especially for the Rembramnce Day celebrations in our farming community. It is beautiful isn't especially when the sunlight filters through the crystals.
