a little over an hour south of austin, is the history-rich city of san antonio.
we decided to take a side trip spending a day exploring this again new-to-us south central city of texas.
it was filled to the brim with fascinating, interesting sights, sounds and smells!
did you know the scent of texas barbeque wafts through the city from morning 'til night?! truly!
with our senses alive, we stayed outside heading straight to the san antonio river walk, also known as paseo del rio. the river walk is a network of sidewalks set along the banks of the san antonio river. the walkway is one story below the city streets and is lined with restaurants, bars, shops, outdoor entertainment venues and beautiful green gardens, trees and bridges. along the way, we were entertained by a mariachi band. classic.
from the river walk, we headed to the site of the alamo. the history of the former mission was familiar to me and paul, who has a natural fascination and keen knowledge of all things historic, war, battle, but most of my children missed out on many american history lessons as they grew up overseas. we spent hours at the site, they couldn't get enough information about the alamo's rich history, an inspiration to all, especially texans.
we visited four more colonial missions around san antonio as well.
we drove to them which was fine, but i wish we'd had the time to rent bikes and use the new new mission reach system which provides hiking and biking paths along 8 miles of the san antonio river interconnecting the river walk with the mission land sites. next time.
before saying goodbye to san antonio, we stopped for traditional mexican chow at
the last day of our trip was new years day. we loaded up for the drive back to dallas to fly home. halfway between austin and dallas is the little but noteworthy town city of waco. unfortunately, waco was "put on the map", for me at least, in 1993 by what is now known as the waco siege. the site of the incident is open to the public so we had a look. so many children died here, a heartwrenching tragedy.
while in waco, i wanted to visit magnolia market at the silos, the flagship store and picnic garden owned by the popular and much admired fixer-upper reality show couple, chip and joanna gaines.
i asked margo to take a photo of me in front of the store (unfortunately closed on new years day) to send to a friend........hey, liz!
photographer margo kept the camera rolling......
i wish i could have taken a look inside. again, next time.
how could we leave texas without having a real texan bar-b-q?! which is andrew's all-time favorite food, i might add.
well, we couldn't. so before leaving waco, we stopped at rudy's bar-b-q to eat up the best in texas bar-b-q!
so handy to have texan kensey with us, she knows her stuff!
well y'all, that's it........thanks texas.
have a great weekend.
