paul's birthday started off the week. happy birthday, baby. i made our family's all time favorite poppy seed bread and took it up to the office so the guys could sing happy birthday to paul. c'mon paul, it's cool to make a wish and blow out the candles amongst your manly men grain trader buddies. speaking of manly men, how awesome is colorado? you're just driving down the road, minding your own business when all of a sudden, there they are, true blue, hat wearing, horse ridin', hard workin', legit cowboys. got to love it.
both margo and nicole were back east in my hometown neck of the woods this week but not traveling together. margo was visiting her parent's-in-law in virginia taking in the historic sights of williamsburg and jamestown, including selfies with her childhood hero pocahontas. nicole attended a conference in washington d.c. and stayed to do a couple of days of sightseeing. luckies!
it is the last of my garden to table delights for the year, rustic leek and potato soup. i was anxious to harvest this first time try at growing leeks and was disappointed to dig them up and find them so small, so very small. hmmmm, next year i will plant the seeds earlier, i'm thinking early april, to give them a longer growing season. they were miniature and the entire harvest only made this one batch of soup....sigh....but they were absolutely fresh and delicious. the soup, i use cook's illustrated rustic leek and potato soup recipe and felt just right for a chilly november evening supper. happy thanksgiving everyone. may you take the time during this meaningful holiday to count your blessings and share words of gratefulness with loved ones.
