sunday drive

it's good to get out and about and remember where we are in this beautiful world, to shake us out of our every day and remind us to look up, look out, get perspective. our sunday drive yesterday did just that for me and it was wonderful. paul and i didn't travel far, only about 30 miles up to golden gate canyon but it could have been three hundred miles away......

as we drove up to the mountains, my mind began to clear and my senses awoke. i remembered that i forgot what a magnificent place we live in. opening the window just a crack, pine scented breezes entered and i shivered from the fresh, icy chill. we passed snow-ladened mountain houses that never seem to see the sun and ice packed driveways that make venturing out difficult. i wondered if the inhabitants felt this a blessing or a curse.

on we went until the views were too much and i just had to stop and take a photo climbing in the bed of paul's pickup to get the best height advantage. then stopped again at a designated viewing platform we didn't know about. wow!! it's magnificent! it hasn't snowed in the valley for weeks so it was nice to tramp through the snow in the crisp, fresh air and be amongst the snowcapped mountains.

with evening coming on, back down, down we went and the sky began to color and then color deeper and more dramatic. stop, please paul, i have to capture this. stop again, it's incredible. paul then got out his phone because neither of us could believe the colors of the sky and felt the need to take a stream of photos. we just couldn't let this beauty go to waste.

ten minutes from home, i'm still amazed by the colors and now just shoot from the moving car as the red earth meets a fading blue sky. home again, renewed, refreshed, with a promise to remember to look out, to look up, be deliberate in keeping this perspective.

paul, we are lucky, you and i.

is courage,
not weakness.
