nicole's story

a story of life.........

nicole and her boyfriend max, have had a frustrating few months after their move from boulder to los angeles just before christmas last year.  these two amazing and recent university honor graduates spent the last 3 months tirelessly applying for work to no avail.  nicole was to the point of offering volunteer hours instead at art galleries and museums feeling that at least she could use her time doing something that would give her experience in her field of study.  then finally, after each submitting over 35 applications around the l.a. area, max was hired at a local restaurant as a host.  grateful yet frustrated, he accepted the minimum wage offer.  a few weeks later, nicole was offered a waitress position at a different local restaurant chain and was to start training on the saturday.

to add to their already discouraging situation, nicole and max had a perilous experience hiking one day in the mountains outside of los angeles.  finally hours and hours late, they arrived home exhuasted and dehydrated.  a few days later, they realized they had also been exposed to poison oak leaving them both bed ridden with severe allergic reactions.  nicole so much so that her eyes had swollen shut and her ankles and knees were unable to bend for the swelling - and she was finally supposed to start a job in a couple of days!  now she was worried that she wouldn't be recovered in time.  she was about at her wit's end when.......nicole got a phone call.

one of the art galleries that nicole had applied to a few weeks previously, had told her that they would be unable to use her but did suggest that one of their artists was looking for help.  nicole had put in a call to the artist but had not yet heard back from him.  it was this artist on the phone, asking nicole to come for an interview on the friday before she was to start the waitressing job on the saturday.  so, wearing a long sleeved, high necked shirt and long pants to hide her red-rashed, puffy and inflamed skin she set off for the interview.  to make a long story short - he was absolutely bowled over by her. so much so, that he asked if she could start as his personal assistant right then and there.  nicole was elated and so appreciative but told him that her ride, max, was waiting to take her home.  the artist asked to meet max too.  he then proceeded to interview max and was also extremely impressed with him.  he immediately offered max a job as well  -  both offers too good to refuse.  dreams began to come true for the two of them.  they subsequently quit their restaurant jobs and have been in a state of euphoria ever since.
nicole's official job title is: project manager and max's is: personal research assistant.

to introduce you to this amazing, generous and very successful, british, contemporary artist look:

so, for a few weeks now, these two ecstatic art historians have been immersed in the way out world of private art collectors, gallery owners, movie stars and the like.

so, you never, ever know what life has up it's sleeve.  but, you can always know that perseverance, determination, preparation, courage and hope will allow you to leap with confidence when the window of opportunity opens before you.

the end

  2. Janet that is a very powerful story.
While we were at Kauai together you had hinted
to me that something wonderful had happened to
Nicole. But we never got around to talking about
it. Too many beaches to visit,
I am so happy to read the story now and know that
Nicole and Max are working together for this dynamic British artist.
