auntie zita

we have an amazing woman in our lives and right now she is here visiting us fresh from south africa.
let me introduce you to
auntie zita
she is also known as gramzy and madam.
but she will always be auntie zita to us.

 paul attended
in cape town.  in fact, he grew up just down the lane from this distinguished school.
many boarders from the country stayed there during the school year
one of which was a fantastic boy named keith hill.  keith's parents
gordon and zita hill had a farm and a beach home outside of cape town
and paul, the city boy, would spend many a school holiday or weekend
palling around with keith and being fed by auntie zita.  her meals rival his mother mervyl's,
which is no small feat.

paul has such respect and admiration for this world hopping, strong and able woman which has lead to a lifelong relationship.  Paul introduced me to auntie zita
many years ago on my first trip to south africa.  she took me, this self conscious and naive american under her wing and made me feel more comfortable by teaching me so much about about my new and unfamiliar surroundings.  i too fell in love with her vivacity and tenacious personality, as well as her cooking and now our children have fallen under her spell.
auntie zita spends hours with gabi teaching her the card game spite and malice and the remaining waking hours she has used mentoring me around the garden and cooking up a south african storm in the kitchen making the following list of meals to freeze.  she wants to help me with our very busy and hungry family.

beef stroganoff - 2 meals
bobotie - 2 meals
chicken breyani - 2 meals

thank you so much auntie zita.  we love spending this precious time with you and
having you in our home.

it is the end of the regular track season so a huge barbeque for the athletes and their families was held
yesterday, under stormy skies.  ben has lettered in track each year - we are so proud of his commitment and determination. unfortunately, it has been a frustrating track season for him as he
has dealt with injuries, sickness and trying to balance a hundred things.
however............the season is not quite over for him.
he has qualified to run the 100 meter in the state finals this weekend.

you amaze me my darling, sprinter boy with the way you keep so focused, cool, calm and collected
as the pressure to perform becomes so intense.
i am your biggest fan!

what a crazy time of year! ben and sab had to leave the "end of season" track barbeque
and race up to the school for the "start of season" football dinner!
and as we near the end of the school year, many final concerts and performances
are scheduled. so, tonight was ben's jazz band final performance........

ben played drums and piano beautifully.
it was a great show and such a nice way to relax and unwind during this full to the brim week.
