i surprised gabi with chalkboard closet doors for her birthday. she loves them!
i'll share a quick "how to" on working with chalkboard paint. it's easy and fun, for sure.
1. enlist the help of your strong son to transfer existing white painted closet doors to garage.
*you can get creative and turn any surface into a fully-erasable chalkboard - plastic, metal, glass...
2. prep doors by wiping with mild soap and water and protect any hardware with low-tack tape.
*some surfaces may first need a coat of primer, then light sanding
3. use a brush or roller (short-nap) to apply chalkboard paint.
*i chose traditional black but chalkboard paint, which also comes in clear, can be tinted any color!
4. i would recommend applying 2 coats of paint. i actually applied 3 coats just to use up the paint. since this was a rush job, trying to get them painted, dried and rehung before gabi got home from school in very wet weather, i set up fans to speed up the drying process.
*enjoy this photo because i will never again invite you back into our messy garage.
5. dried, hung and ready.......surprise! she loves them! (harry is still deciding)
*allow the painted area to cure for 3 days - be patient
6. 3 days later........we're almost done. before writing on chalkboard, use the long side of a piece of white chalk to rub the entire painted surface evenly.
7. or accept the help of teenagers and they will do it how ever they please. thanks, girls! erase area with chalkboard eraser.
*after this initial erasing, i recommend using a damp cloth or paper towel to erase (check out the chalky carpet)
8. you are finished!! go for it girls................
happy birthday, gabi
and you have a lovely weekend.
That looks awesome!!! I want it for myself....
